Some Prayer Points From The Book of The Songs of Solomon
Some
Prayer Points From The Book of The Song of Songs
Writer’s
Foreword
A singular verse or more in few instances,
is (are) used in each of the eight chapters that make up this book out of which
the prayers are drawn out from as the Spirit imprints it in my heart, and I
know I have Holy Spirit in me.
The quoted verse (or verses) are clearly
shown in bold and italics immediately after writing that some prayers from the
chapter to allow each person to read it. This is followed by some explanations
on those verses, that would give the reader and brethren some insights into the
verse(s) and perhaps the book. This I believe would enhance the brethren’s
attitude to the book and the prayer points with a key that would open the
hearts of the brethren into some unraised prayer points on the verse or the
entire chapter or book as the case may be.
Opening a book |
These simple and straightforward
explanations are titled, “Pre-Prayer Tonic, Pre-Prayer Nuggets” etc. after
these are the prayer points listed out which are also given different titles
like, “Prayer Bullets, Prayer Swords”, etc. These are sincerely designed to add
live to what the reader is reading as well as ensuring that the person who
wants to offer the prayer to know that Prayer is a serious business and lazy
people cannot successfully pass through the school of prayer.
The disciples did not know this before
Jesus Christ’s departure, or maybe they know but they were yet resting on Jesus
shoulders, being carried by Jesus as parents carry their children on their
shoulders, but after Jesus departure when they were alone and they couldn’t go
back to the scribes, Sadducees and the leaders of their time because of what
they had known, they accept the responsibility of going to the school of prayer
and that was when they were able to make appreciable changes during their days
on earth, the effects of which we still feel today.
You may also have been viewing Prayer as a
child’s play before and or as a lazy man’s means of navigating some issues, but
I want to tell you that you are mistaken, because prayer is not meant for
people who are lazy.
I want you to know that the explanations
given on each verse (or verses) are related to other verses that make up the
chapter and the entire books that make up the bible for lines must be upon
lines and precepts upon precepts, here a little, there a little.
“For precept must
be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a
little, and there a little”
(Isa. 28:10)
Each person praying to the Most High God
needs to know that it is God’s
prerogative to answer prayers, it is however our duties to pray unto the Lord. Therefore, do not
relent in praying to your heavenly father, Jesus.
“But thou, when
thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to
thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall
reward thee openly.” (Matt. 6:6)
“The eyes of the
LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.” (Psa. 34:15)
“And it shall come
to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking,
I will hear.” (Isa. 65:24)
It would be of interest to you
knowing that this write up does not talk about the means of prayer, methods of
prayer, types of prayer etc. it just lists out some prayer points which
expectedly the reader could add to as he or she
wishes in combination with some of the prayer points listed here that could be
used to commune with our heavenly father, who has called for us,
his children to pray unto him.
The name which should be used
in talking to our heavenly father has been stated in unmistaken terms by Jesus
Christ in the Holy Writ before his departure, and the name is Jesus Christ. This
the apostles subscribed to and used throughout their sojourn on earth which
makes their ministry a successful and a thriving one. While using this
wonderful name, they handed the same over to their followers through which we
all got the message of the good news today.
Jesus Christ has not asked for some modifications to the name,
neither has his disciples. It is however appalling today to hear people say and talk to
their followers of the need to add some modifications to this fearful and
terrible name to the kingdom of the devil as the name is not potent enough.
Many a one does this because they have not
been totally delivered from their former ways, which is the way of the heathens
and because they have not outrightly been delivered, they have been using some
means to improve on the name like what they learnt in the world were before
coming into Jesus fold. By their actions sometimes we doubt the authenticity of
their salvation because someone who could be saved by simple means of faith in
unseen Person would not find it hard relying in the simplicity of the name of
Jesus to access the throne of his father and my father: Jesus.
Some add modifications to the name because
they want to carve a niche for themselves in the hearts of their followers,
they want to be known and associated with something like the heathens do carve
niche for themselves in the hearts of their followers.
Others base their formats of modifications
on what they read from the scriptures that God
calls himself the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But how many of those people
today have we heard that God himself calls himself their God? Outside that, we
need know that we are in a new dispensation and generation, and new generation,
New Testament is singularly based on Jesus Christ, New Testament revolves round
Jesus and Jesus alone.
Many of those modifications which are
being added today bring divisions and hatred amongst the
brethren, and that is why we find it hard these
days to make appreciable penetrations into the camps of the enemies let alone
overcoming them.
I have been thinking that it was the disciples, Apostles Peter, John, Paul and so on
who ought to be fighting for such recognitions, they are those who ought
to be wanting their names to be used to access the throne of God but they never
did that, because they didn’t lose focus, neither did their followers did that
too, because they know the world passes away and the lusts thereof.
We have however been subsumed in the
pursuits of worldly fame today such that we find it hard to know or sincerely
vouch for anyone as heading for the Kingdom of heaven.
I
will want to implore you that if you will be
using this article or the wordings there for prayer as well as your praying
wherever you are you should be using the name above all names as your only name
to pray unto your father and my father, and the name is Jesus Christ, not his
titles neither any of the “gods of some people’s names”.
“And whatsoever ye
shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the
Son.
“If ye shall ask
any thing in my name, I will do it.”
(Joh. 14:13-14)
“And in that day
ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall
ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
“Hitherto have ye
asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be
full.” (Joh. 16:23-24)
It is imperative that we pray
with understanding as well as pray correctly so that our prayers be expressly
answered by God.
He has promised to answer our
prayers as a father (parents) answers his (their) children requests, therefore,
have confidence in him that he will
answer your prayers in Jesus name. Amen.
General
Overview of The Book
If this book, The Songs of Solomon, is not
incorporated into the bible before now, and we later found out the book, it is
verily clear that theologians and bible scholars would not want to add the book
to the bible.
Matthew Henry says this about this book,
that it is one of the books not quoted in the New Testament. Jewish scholars in
the strongest possible terms counsel their young ones not to read the book
until they were thirty years old and above lest by abusing that which is pure
and sacred “(horrendum dictu—horrible
to say!)” arouse the latent fire of lust in their lives which ought not
to happen at that age and time, till after the legalization and solemnization. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown
says if anyone has attained such maturity, this song of songs is one of the
most instructive of the sacred writings.
Theology of Work Project says, the Song of
Solomon which is known as the Song of Songs is a love poetry. Despite being a
love poetry, it has a vast meaning and value showing the beauty of nature. Spiritually
reading through one shall discover that it shows the song sings by lovers who
are in courtship, married, living and work together. While living together we
shall experience ups and downs, successes and failures, all these are clearly
expressed in the songs.
Reading Bible |
These
would encourage some believers who do not wish to be reading this book to read
the book.
1. If you can see this work as being
directed to the Jewish church, because the Israelis were betrothed unto God,
through their fore parents he entered covenant, marriage-covenant, with them.
By betrothing them to himself, he expects nothing less than a complete love to
him, with their spirit, soul, mind and body. It shouldn’t surprise you to
recall that he uses infidelity language (adultery and fornication) while
talking about their idolatry. This book shows that though your lover may be
hidden from you at times but that does not mean she or he does not love you
again.
2. When believers view this book in the
spiritual sense, they will see that as Yahweh presents himself as the husband
of the Jews so is he presenting himself as husband of the church through Jesus
Christ. (Isa. 64:5; Hos. 2:16, 19; Matt. 25:1; Eph. 5:32; Rev. 19:7; 21:2,9)
3. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown says because the
author makes mention of the chariots of Pharaoh (SOS 1:9) some say Solomon was
expressing his love for pharaoh’s daughter. This should however not be seen in that
light, it could be view from the perspective of the deliverance of the children
of Israel, which the Old Testament Church from the hosts of pharaoh at the red
sea.
4. In the book the we can also see that
the bride is presented as shepherdess (SOS 1:7), which of course is abomination
to the Egyptians then (Gen. 46:34)
5. Authors like Origen and Theodoret viewed
Solomon’s teachings as a three steps ladder: from the book of Proverbs, which
enjoins on good moral upstanding; Ecclesiastes, which shows how vain everything
in the world is; and Canticles which shows the union of Christ with the Church.
6. Moody Stuart says this about the book:
(a) Church speaks of the coming Christ at the beginning (SOS 1:2); (b) In the
middle Christ speaks to the disciples and apostles (SOS 5:1) (c) At the end, Old
Testament church figuratively speaks of the coming Gentile Church. On another
note he says, we can view the book from individual perspective as follows: (a)
Individual souls longing for the manifestation of Christ, the various
experience passed through after knowing him (SOS 1:2, 4; 2:8; 3:1, 4, 6-7); (b)
The enjoyment, the withdrawal of the enjoyment through carelessness of the
bride, her repentance as shown by her longings and the eventual reconciliation
(SOS 5: 1-3); (c) The outcome of the knowledge of Christ, assurances, labors of
love, being anxious for the salvation of sinners and the daily look out for the
Groom’s (Christ’s) second coming (SOS 7:10, 12; 8:8-10, 14)
Pulpit commentary says, the word “song” (שִׁיר)
does not automatically connote that the song is to be composed to music which
would be sung. Viewing the words here, the word song would have been מִוְמור, carmen,
"lyric poem," "hymn," or "ode." Luther in
his word did not dissociate himself from the idea as he gives it this title 'Das
Hohelied,' which by interpretation means, the chief or finest of songs.
Theology of Work Project views this from
another perspective by saying that, it should be known that in the ancient
world all poetry was sung. While singing this song, there would be vocal
leaders who could be male or female and choruses. If you view this song as songs
presented at concert, the audience would be the aristocratic audience in Solomon’s
court which shows strong analogies to the kind of love music being sang in the
ancient day Egypt.
As close as it is to the Egyptian lyrics
in poetry, yet Egyptian poetry focuses on “ecstasy and afflictions young
lovers” but this cannot be said about the song of songs as it has deeper
meanings in all respects.
This book though could be viewed from
different perspective but by and large it would be seen that it expresses the
love of man and woman, which celebrates the beauty of courtship, wedding and
marriage.
Some say that Solomon may not be sole
author of the book, but other school of thoughts do not sign off on this
and they say if the work is “referring to” someone else, another preposition (עַל)
would have been used. Delitzsch says that the nonexistence of any labeling of
Solomon as the “King of Israel” neither “son of David”, like the ones found in
the books of Proverbs and Preacher, confirms the persuasion that Solomon was
the sole author of this intriguing book. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown says the unity
of the words in the book is demonstrated by similar expressions all over the
book (SOS 2:6, 7; 3:5; 8:3, 4; 2:16).
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown
in his commentary says, this book’s title betokens
its superiority according to Hebrew idiom, as the holy of holies of songs. One
of the five volumes (megilloth) placed after the Pentateuch in the Jewish
scripture, and the fourth of the Hagiographa (Cetubim); or the third part of
the Old Testament, the remaining two being the Law and the prophets; is this
book.
Cetubim in Jewish reckoning means Psalms,
Proverbs, Job, Canticles, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes (Preachers), Esther,
Daniel, Ezra (including Nehemiah), and Chronicles. Its canonicity is sure
because it is found in all Hebrew manuscripts of Scripture; and it is not
excluded in the Greek Septuagint; in the catalogues of Melito, bishop of
Sardis, A.D. 170 (Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, 4.26), and of others of the
ancient Church.
Online Wikipedia says, the Song of Songs
which is called Song of Solomon or Canticles in Hebrew called שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים Šîr
Haššîrîm; in
Greek and Ancient Greek it is called Ἆισμα
Ἀισμάτων; in Romans it is called Âisma Āismátōn;
while in Latin it is called Canticum
Canticorum. It is
one of the megillot (scrolls)
found in the last section of the Tanakh which is Ketuvim (or "Writings"), which
is one of the books within the Old Testament. It is a unique book within the
Old Testament writings because it shows no interest in Law, no interest in the
Covenant neither the God of Israel nor teach wisdom like Proverbs or
Ecclesiastes does. Be that as it may it is found to have affinities to wisdom
literature by celebrating the desires of lovers for each other. It should be
added that in the modern-day Judaism, the Song is often read on the Sabbath
during the Passover which signifies the beginning of the grain harvest as well
as shows the memorial of their exodus from Egypt.
Date:
The date of writing could be gotten from
the language that was used in writing this book. We need know that after Hebrew’s
exile from the Babylonian in 6th century BCE, Aramaic language replaces Hebrew.
The vocabulary, morphology, idiom, and syntax point to Aramaic in writing,
which essentially is centuries after King Solomon’s demise whom the book has
been attributed to, to be the author.
The language resembles that of Mesopotamian
and Egyptian’s style of writing poetry of love in the first millennium and that
of Theocritus writing who was a Greek poet during the early part of 3rd century
BCE. From these, it is assumed that the date of writing would be around 10th to
2nd centuries BCE.

Prayer
From Song of Solomon Chapter 1
“The song of songs, which is Solomon's.”
(SOS 1:1)
Pre-Prayer
Talks
David Guzic says the followings about this
verse
a) It would be hard accepting this book
into the bible if it were to be found later,
“If a manuscript of this
little book were found alone, detached from the biblical context and tradition,
it undoubtedly would be viewed as secular. The book has no obvious religious
content.” (Kinlaw)
“…All
the Scriptures, indeed, are holy… but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies.”
(Rabbi Aqiba, an early Jewish commentator on Song of Solomon, cited in Kinlaw)
Charles Spurgeon preached 59
sermons on this book (in Victorian England) and Bernard of Clairvaux
(1090-1153) preached 86 sermons on chapters one and two alone.
b) Others commentary on this book
i) Some
do not want to read this book at all. Origen (c.185-c.254), who
is an important teacher in the early church,
and who explains that the book could be viewed with Christ and the church says on the Song of Solomon
that, “I advise and
counsel everyone who is not yet rid of vexations of the flesh and blood, and
has not ceased to feel the passions of this bodily nature, to refrain from
reading the book and the things that will be said about it.” Origen apparently felt he was prepared to study Song
of Solomon because he castrated himself when he was a young man.
ii) Trapp
expresses this perspective: “The chief speakers are not Solomon and the
Shulamite… but Christ and his Church.”
iii) From others perspective this book is
a drama dealing with three characters: Solomon, a simple shepherd (like the
story Prophet Nathan told king David when he was involved with Bathsheba (2
Sam. 12)) and the young maiden.
The idea of the story is based on king
Solomon travelling through his kingdom one day and sees a beautiful damsel who
arrested his heart with her beauty, like the mother of the king arrested his
father when she was taken her bathe and his father was seeing her from the
balcony of his palace (2 Sam. 11).
This beautiful paragon arrested King Solomon’s
heart with her arrays of beauty, a peculiar one in his kingdom and which he
thinks ought not to be somebody else’s apart from the king, the Kings those
days assume good and beautiful ladies are meant for them as well as the wealthy
ones in the society but not the poor, downtrodden neither strugglers.
Intriguingly, this beauty personified has
been betrothed to a simple shepherd in his kingdom but the King for his position
in the society arranged that they meet. After meeting with her, he decided to
win her heart with his gifts and loving words. The lady’s heart though swayed
but after a while she returned to her first love, the simple shepherd.
iv) Readers of this book could also view
this book literally, as a powerful narrative of sensual and romantic
involvement between a man and a woman. It is exposures of lovers to each other
during courtship, and marriage.
v) The consequential meaning of this book
is gotten from how God uses marriage pictorial to talk about his relationship
with his people, this continued in the new testament writings too. With this at
the back of our minds we can say that this book shows us the beauty of love, keenness
of love, and the connection that should exist between God and his people.
vi) “There
are those who treat this Book as a song of human love. There are those who
consider its only value is that of its mystical suggestiveness. Personally, I
believe that both values are here.” (Morgan)
c) This book shows God’s disposition to
love and marriage, that it is a thing that should not be handled with levity.
i) Negative view towards marriage came in
the early centuries of the church, when in 325 a proposal was made to prohibit all
clergy from living as married at the Council of Nicea, but this proposal was
turned down. Pope Siricius in 386 compelled all priests to live as chaste,
later this commandment was extended to the deacons of the church many of those
who were married at this time. In 440-461, Leo the Great out of sympathy for those
married women said the priests and their wives could be living together as brothers
and sisters without having sexual intercourse. Later, a vow would be taken by
anyone who wants to become a priest to sign with his wife that they would live
a pure life after being ordained, a life not associated with sexual
intercourse. This graduated to not ordaining anyone who is married later.
ii) Where the idea that a real spiritual
person ought not to be married and enjoy sexual communion came from is not
known because the idea is not established in the Old Testament because all the
high priests were married, all the prophets except Jeremiah whom God commanded
not to marry (Jeremiah 16:2) were married.
iii) Talking from the New Testament point
of view, we shall see that the idea that a spiritual person should not be married
neither enjoy sexual relationship is not established there, because Jesus talks
about the import of marriage (Matthew 19:3-9), the apostles talk about the
sanctity of marriage (Hebrews 13:4) and encourage the elders to be married
before occupying such position (1 Tim. 3:4; Tit. 1:6-7). Jesus attended a
wedding where he performed miracle and at the close of age according to the
book of Revelation there would be wedding feast. (John 2:1-7; Rev. 19:6-10)
iv)
There is slight difference between Old and New Testament in that the old allows
for marriage before occupying positions of leadership in the society, but this
is not totally true of the New Testament because Jesus did not marry, Paul was
single (1 Cor. 7:7) and Jesus talks about eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven
(Matt. 19:11-12).
v) Kinlaw
says, marriage neither means an inferior state nor human weakness. It was
instituted before the fall of man by God and the physical love associated with
it shouldn’t be considered impure. This status should be delightful to both
partners ((Proverbs 5:15-19; 1 Cor. 7:3)
vi) Kinlaw says, the Song of Songs makes
no reference to procreation because that is not the basis for expressing sexual
love.
vii) For hundredths of years back, and in
some regions where Christianity is just reaching, the dominant view is that
sexual emotion and real spiritual life do not go together. Thus, people are
always encouraged to repress their sexual nature to be able to gain more of
Christ. “The result of this perspective was that the medieval
church had a love affair with the Song of Songs. An eroticism precluded at the
human level was permitted at the divine. No book of Scripture received such
attention between Augustine and Luther. What Galatians was to the Reformers,
the Song of Songs was to the church for a thousand years.” (Kinlaw)
d) Solomon composed these songs and the
entire composition here is one of the greatest of all his compositions which is
about 1,005 songs (1 Kings 4:32)
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown says, King
Solomon’s name or Jerusalem is not added in the opening of the book of Proverbs
and Ecclesiastes because his personality was hidden under Christ.

Prayer
From Chapter 2
“As the lily
among thorns, so is my love
among the daughters.”
(SOS 2:2)
Pre-Prayer
Talk
Ellicott in his commentary says, “The
Arabs have the word (lily), and apply it to any brilliantly colored flower, as
the tulip, anemone, ranunculus. Although many plants of the lily tribe flourish
in Palestine, none of them give a predominant character to the flora. There
are, however, many other plants which would in popular language be called
lilies.”
The author compares at the first verse
himself to rose of Sharon and lily of the valleys. He indubitably was using
things common during their days to explain his position, himself, how the rose beautifies
Sharon which is a place in Palestine. Some places ordinarily would not be
beautiful if not for the presence of some things there. Thus, this author compares
himself to a rose that makes the place called Sharon adorable, a place that
people would always want to be.
Valleys surrounded by mountains would not
be captivating because they would not receive enough sunshine as to make some
plants beautiful there. But despite this, he says of himself as being a lily of
the valley, a lily that is delightful, that makes the valley a wonderful place.
After this, in the following verse, he
talks again about the love of his life, the maiden which he has been attracted
to as being like a lily, (שׁושׁנּה שׁשׁן
שׁושׁן שׁוּשׁן), shûshan shôshân shôshân shôshannâh (phonetic spelling shoo-shan' (2,3)
sho-shawn' sho-shan-naw') which is a flower or an ornament that is situated
among the thorns: (חוח), chôach (pronounced as kho'-akh), which means thistle, bramble.
This means that he was looking beyond her
love, he has seen many maidens in her kingdom but none out of those maidens
that he has seen can be compared to her love, she surpassed them in all facets.
God has interacted with many people in the
world, God has deal with many dispensations in the world, but this
dispensation, the dispensation of grace he considers it outstanding and better
than all of the dispensations that he has been dealing with over the years that
is why it is verily important that one become a member of this team by
accepting Jesus Christ into one’s life when one still have his or her life in
him.
Some
Prayer Arrows

corrupt people of the world, Oh Lord give me now in Jesus name,
6. Oh Lord do not allow anything to cover

Prayer
From Chapter 3
“The watchmen
that go about the city found me: to
whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?”
(SOS 3:3)
Pre-Prayer
Nuggets
Cambridge Bible for schools and colleges
says, “Grätz supposes that the mention of watchmen favours his very late date
for the book. But probably this obvious precaution was taken in Palestine from
the earliest times”.
This lover has been on her bed, which in Hebrew
word is (משׁכּב), mishkâb
(phonetical spelling mish-kawb'), which
could mean couch, lying and has been looking forward to seeing her love, but
alas her love did not surface contrary to what was in her heart. This she
couldn’t keep to herself after a while and she decides to go and look for her
love.
She walks
through the town but to her chagrin she couldn’t find the person she loved. She
presumably would have searched for her love at the places where she knew her
love would be. For a partner cannot go endlessly around the streets without no
bearing. She knows where her love would probably be because of their expressed
love one to another and they have known where each other would be at a point in
time, but she was mistaken this night because she did not find her love, her
heart desires.
While moving around
to other places where she never thought her partner would be, as it is being
said that one haphazardly searches for a lost thing, but in this case a person,
loved one, she was met by the watchmen of the city. Watchman is (שׁמר), shâmar
(pronounced as shaw-mar') in Hebrew,
which means hedge, guard, protect. Those watchmen who do normal and regular
routine checks for the houses and people around the city ensuring that proper security
is place came across this lover and she cannot hide her mind from them, because
she was walking around the city when she ought to be on her bed.
God has for long been expecting us at his
side, but when we did not surface that is when he left what he was doing and
come in search for us. He looks for us at different places, even where he ought
not to go to in search of us, he went there to look for us. It is imperative
that we make ourselves available unto the Lord.
Some
Prayer Missiles
1. Oh Lord do not cease to watch over me
in Jesus name,
2. Locate and find me out where I get lost
in Jesus name,
3. Oh Lord send helpers to me in Jesus
name,
4. Oh Lord let my helpers locate me in
Jesus name,
5. The person I love must not get lost oh
Lord in Jesus name,
6. Bridge the gap between the person I
love and me in Jesus name,
7. May I be located by the people that
matter in Jesus name,
8. Do not be far from me oh Lord my
salvation in Jesus name,
9. Etc.
"Awake, o north wind; come, o south wind! Blow on
my garden so that its fragrant spices may send out their sweet smell. May my
beloved come into His garden and eat its delightful fruit"
(S.O.S. 4:16 (GoBibleNet))
King James Version says,
“Awake, O
north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into
his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.” (SOS
4:16)

Cambridge Bible for schools and colleges
says, “The north wind is cool in Palestine, and the south or south-west wind is
warm.”
The north wind strongly moves (Pro. 25:23),
the south wind gently moves (Job 37:17; Acts 27:13), the west wind is
associated with rain (Lk 12:54) and the east wind is tempestuous and withering
(Job 27:21; Isa. 27:8; Gen. 41:23)
Sometimes strong wind is needful for
plants pollination, the lover may have said this with a view that there is need
for pollination in the garden of love planted by them. After this he talks
about the gentle flowing wind to blow on the garden. Both winds are essential
for the growth and pollination of plants in the garden.
In the same manner is it with love, love
of a spouse to his partner would be strong and gentle, the mixture of the two
makes a wonderful growth of love in the hearts of lovers.
As the wind blow in succession, then the spices,
the productions of the plants of the garden would be seen which the lovers
could enjoy the labor of their hands.
We need these for spiritual growth and
edification. The wind is usually related to the spirit in the bible, you and I
need the strong spirit of God, and the gentle spirit of God to lead and see us
through this terrible world.
Some
Prayer Points
1. Blow on me and my

S.O.S.
5:1
"I went to my garden, dear friend, best lover!
Breathed the sweet fragrance, I ate the fruit and honey, I drank the nectar and
wine. Celebrate with me, friends! Raise your glasses-"To life! To
Love!""- The Message
Bible.
King James Version says,
“I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh
with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine
with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.”
While waiting in the garden for her
arrival, the groom did not stay idle but was working before her arrival, “I have gathered my myrrh with my spice”.
In the process of working he became hungry and took out of the honeycomb like Jonathan
did when they were about to go to war (1 Sam. 14:25)
Ellicott says of this place that it means
an invitation to the wedding for his friends whom he asked to drink abundantly.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown says the honeycomb differs from the liquid honey
dropping from the tree, and this shows the originality of what he is taken.
We need to know that our lives are like gardens
before the Lord,
he desires to keep it and eat out of what we produced.
Some
Prayer Ballistics
1. Oh Lord lead me to the
garden of love, blessings, promotions etc in Jesus name,
2. Oh Lord get me out of the
garden of hatred/deception/betrayal/setbacks etc that the enemies have place me
in Jesus name,
3. I hand over the garden of
my destiny(ies) into your hands oh Lord, watch over it in Jesus name
4. Let your angels surround my
gardens as from thenceforth oh Lord in Jesus name,
An insight into the next two
prayers is this. When an egg cannot be hatched by an hen after days of
incubation, the eggs get spoilt & started smelling because of Hydrogen
Sulphide it is producing, such a smell would put off people from that area. The
prayer point now is,
5. Every Pungent smell driving
me away from my gardens should be cleared or removed by God now in Jesus name,
6. Remove the sources of
pungent smell driving people away from my garden dear Lord in Jesus name,
An insight into the next two
prayer points is this. When flowers and plants in ones garden does not receive
adequate sunlight, how would it open? When the nutrients in the garden are
depleted, how would the flowers produce nectar? How would the planted seeds in
one's garden germinate when these needful things are neither there nor
depleted? And even when these germinated how would they grow to maturity?
With this in view, shall we
pray these prayers,
7. Oh Lord all the necessary
nutrients, living and non-living, that my garden needed for optimal performance
and production, Father supply them now in Jesus name,
8. Fertilize or apply
fertilizers to the garden of my life in Jesus name,
9. Irrigate the garden of my
life so that my garden produces fruits in season and out of season in Jesus
name,
10. Oh Lord, grant me the
grace to eat out of the fruit of my labour or work in Jesus name,
11. No one puts honey in
his/her mouth and look miserable, so the elders say, oh Lord, put your honey in
my life/career/garden/ministry etc in Jesus name,
12. Oh Lord, let it be
pleasing unto you to let me eat out of the honey of my garden (Ecc. 5:19)
13. Miracles that will make
people celebrate with me, oh Lord, let it happen in my life in Jesus name.
Amen.
15. Etc
"I slept but my heart was awake, when I heard my
lover knocking & calling: "open to me, my treasure, my darling, my
dove, my perfect one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness
of the night" (SOS 5:2 (New Living Translation))
King James Version
“I sleep, but
my heart waketh: it is the
voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying,
Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled
with dew, and my locks with the
drops of the night.”
(SOS 5:2)
If we view the preceding verse based on wedding
celebrations that they had, the bride from their post celebration stress
started dozing, but despite this her mind was with her lover. In the slumbering
position, position of half-asleep-half-awake that she was, she was yet
expecting her lover to be back from seeing off his guests.
During the time of waiting, that was when
she started slumbering. Cicero (X) calls this position “semisomni”. In this
position, she heard her love knocking, asking her to come and open the door
unto him because the weather have changed, and the dew is high such that his
body is wet. Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges says dew in Palestine is
often very heavy (Judg. 6:38)
For him not to continue to get wet so that
he gets off the cold soon, he knocks thinking that his wife was wide awake, but
unknown to him that she is in “semisomni” position.
He calls her my sister because he has been
discussing issues with her, he has taken her as himself, he hardly hides
anything from her again. The church is considered one with Jesus Christ, that
is why God would hardly do anything without revealing it unto the church. (Amos
3:7)
He calls her his love. The Hebrew word
used here is (רעיה), ra‛yâh,
(pronounced as rah-yaw') which is
used to express love to a female associate.
My dove (יונה), which is yônâh in Hebrew word. The dove
shows a chaste person, pure and faithful person.
My undefiled (תּם) which is tâm (pronounced as tawm) in Hebrew word. It means complete, morally pious,
plain, upright.
God expects us
to be faithful and upright in all our dealings with him and with people we are
seeing, for it is because of this that we have been saved.
We sometimes slumber off while waiting for
God’s promises such that when God appears with those promises we may not be
ready to take them from his hands for we have been caught in the web of slumbering,
we would be doubtful because our eyes and heads are yet to be cleared.
However, for the love he has for us, he
will still be at the door knocking that we open unto him, for it him but none
other who is at the door with those blessings for us.

SOS 5:5
"I jumped up to open the door for my love, and my hands dripped with perfume. My fingers dripped
with lovely myrrh as I pulled back the bolt" (S.O.S. 5:5-New Living Translation)
“I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the
handles of the lock.”
(SOS 5:5 (KJV))
Pre-Prayer
Proem
The lover continues to knock at the door,
expecting the bride to open the door for him having been done with his
visitors, or what he was doing that keeps him waiting. The bride being in the
position she was before couldn’t get off the bed instantly to open the door to
him, but after a while she gets off her bed to open the door for her lover, and
on her hands are perfumes, lovely and attractive smell that would attract her
lover to her the more.
Some people after they are done in the day
and they wanted to sleep they will still add some perfume to their body. This
may be the position of this lover, she dips her hands in some myrrh when she
was done with everything before she started slumbering.
God stands at the doors of our hearts and
he is knocking, we need to open the door unto him so that he will enter our
hearts and be dwelling there (Rev. 3:20).
As the bride adorn her hands with myrrh,
we also need to adorn our spiritual hands with cleanliness which will show the
position of our hearts. (Psa. 24:4; 18:20;
26:6; Job 9:30; 17:9; Isa 1:15-16; 33:15-16; 1Ti 2:8; Jam 4:8).
It is when we do this that our hands would
be attractive to the Lord to make use of and our hearts pleasant unto the Lord
to want to enter and be dwelling there.

SOS 5:6
"But when I opened the door he was gone. My loved
one had tired of waiting and left. And I died inside-Oh, I felt so bad! I ran
out looking for him. But he was nowhere to be found. I called into the
darkness-but no answer"
(Message Bible, S.O.S. 5:6)
“I opened to
my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I
could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.” (SOS
5:6 (KJV))
Pre-Prayer
Proem
There is time and season for everything so
says that great king (Ecc. 3:1), when the lover has been waiting for a while
and he has been under heavy dew outside, with his clothes probably wet now, he
was feeling the cold of the night, but his spouse seems not to get out of her
state of stupor, his heart was soon pissed off and he left the place, left
knocking, left waiting.
The bible says we should not grieve the
mind of God, the Holy Spirit which the Lord has given us as did the Israelites
in the wilderness when they grieved the mind of God with their continual misdemeanors
which made God punished them, letting them to wander in the wilderness without
entering the promised land. (Psa. 78:40; Eph. 4:30)
When God withdraws himself, his grace from
anyone, hardly would such a one finds such grace again. He withdrew himself
from Samson the powerful when he continued to misbehave, and someone says,
Samson wouldn’t have received the grace again if not that he said he would die
with the Philistines.
“My
soul failed when he spake”
may mean that as this lover was leaving, he was talking, saying some words to
the spouse, which hits the heart of the spouse hard. But by the time she opens
the door he couldn’t be found again.
There is nothing as terrible as wasting
the grace and the privilege that God has given a man. God gives all and sundry
time to repent from their sins but anyone who continues in that state without repentance
such a person would be left behind by God. The person after a while would start
calling but would not be answered because he is not calling unto God when he
was near, as the prophet says, “call
ye upon him while he is near” (Isa.
55:6b)

From Chapter 6
"I am my lover's and my lover is mine. He
caresses the sweet-smelling flowers"
(SOS 6:3 (Message Bible))
King James Version
Pre-Prayer
Proem
The lover was replying those who were asking
her about her beloved, her lover, from the first verse. On getting to this
verse, she replied them in an unequivocal term that she knows her beloved and
belongs to her beloved, because his desire she always do and her love has
enveloped the heart of her lover such that he cannot do anything without
informing her, without carrying her along.
Like Jesus Christ who says, “my
meat is to do the will of him that sent me” (Joh 4:34), and cannot do
anything of his own (Joh 5:30) but to always do the will of the One who sent
him (Joh 6:38) so does the lover, she does the will of her love always as such
she could know where her love is and what he was up to where he was, as stated
in the next phrase, “he feedeth
among the lilies.”
When we are acquainted with the Lord, we
can boldly talk about him wherever we are, it is because we are not acquainted
with him that we cannot talk about him, that we do not know his characters and
attitudes.
We read of God’s testimonials about
patriarch Job in the bible, that he asked Satan that did he notice his son and
servant at all? (Job 1:8; 2:3). They have wonderful relationship such that he
can talk about him openly, because he has studied and known his heart towards
him. Can God say something like this of us? Can we talk about God to others? Do
we talk of God and his Jesus to others?

From Chapter 7
"The mandrakes give out a sweet smell, and at our
doors are all sorts of good fruits, new and old, which I have kept for my loved
one" (SOS 7:13 (Go Bible.))
King James Version says,
“The mandrakes
give a smell, and at our gates are
all manner of pleasant fruits,
new and old, which I have laid
up for thee, O my beloved.” (SOS 7:13)
Pre-Prayer
Proem
One lays up good things for one’s lover,
for the person one has strong feelings (of love) for, for the person one cannot
but think about. But for someone one rarely thinks about, one hardly stores
anything for the person, even when good things are coming, being promised the
person, the person would have given it to another person in one’s heart, one
would have given it to the person one mostly care about before remembering the
person one hardly thinks of.
We, believers in Jesus Christ, are all
engrafted in the hearts of God, he thinks about us every passing second, he
stores his good things for us, he won’t give those good things he has in store to
others, non-believers. This is essentially expressed in his words in John 14
that he goes and makes for us a wonderful place that is well decorated with
beautiful flowers and fruits. (Rev 22)
To get all these, Matthew Henry in his
commentary says we need to exit the world and don’t go where he won’t go with
us. To enjoy God to the fullest in the world we need to start early with him,
accept Jesus now, when the evil times have not come.
Mandrakes in Hebrew word is (דּוּדי), dûday
(pronounced as doo-dah'-ee) which
means boiler or basket, it could also be used as aphrodisiac to promote love.
Pulpit commentary says this mandrake is connected to Mandragora officinalis
which is whitish-green in color, belonging to the order of Solanaceae. The Arabs
call it Abdel-Salm. Matthew Poole says this mandrake is sweet and pleasant
flowers. While Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges says the mandrakes are
love plants. It is described by Tristram as belonging to the family of plants
to which potato belongs. Its flowers are cup-shaped, purple in color, its fruit
has pleasant smell and taste. Groser in his script says in the beginning of May
when the fruit gets ripe its like small apple in size and color, ruddy and with
agreeable odor….
The pleasantness of the fruit cannot be ignored,
and this could be attributed to what happened between Rachel and Leah in Genesis
30:14-15 when the former agrees to trade her night shift with her husband with
the latter. Through this we can say this fruit has association with love as it
happened here.
God has for us, his children as lovers do
have old and new things for his or her lover.
Some
Prayer Swords
1. Let your deposits in me begin to
attract good things unto me in Jesus name,
2. Oh Lord, let your love be my
satisfaction in Jesus name,
3. Oh Lord, satisfy me with your fruit of
the Spirit in Jesus name,
Note:
This shall guide us into the next few
prayer points. "New and old" fruits are useful and we shouldn’t think
it is only new fruits that are useful. New maize would not be too good to be
sow, but old ones are usually sowed. It is of import that we know that God
satisfies His children with both-new and old things. The Yoruba elders used to
say, "the hands of the children cannot reach the roof/ceiling, in the same
vein do the hands of the aged cannot enter the gourd" (ọwọ́ ọmọdé kò tó pẹpẹ,
ti agbalagba na ko wọ akeregbe). Knowing that it is the will of Jehovah God to
satisfy His children with both, we will now pray thus (Read also Mt. 13:52)
4. Oh Lord decorate my life with new
fruits in Jesus name,
5. Oh Lord, every old fruit that I need to
succeed in Life, father release them unto me now in Jesus name
6. Oh Lord, reconnect me with every old
connections/friends that I have lost which I need to make it in my endeavors
7. The new links that I need to forge
ahead in life, Almighty God, connect me with those links now in Jesus name,
8. Take off me old tongues or utterances
that is destroying my life in Jesus name,
9. Every old thing in me, my systems, my
family, my career etc. that needs to be changed oh God my Lord change those
things now in Jesus name,
10. A saying goes thus, "old habits
die hard", every old habit in me that have make my life stagnant, oh Lord
purge me clean of all those habits now in Jesus name,
11. Oh Lord give me new gifts in Jesus
name,
12. Oh Lord give me new tongues in Jesus
name,
13. Oh Lord make my habits new in Jesus
name,
14. Oh Lord, old fruits that I need to
make it in life, but which I have dropped, forsaken or neglected, father bring
them back unto me in Jesus name,
15. Oh Lord, old gifts that shall make me an
outstanding person in my endeavors, father give me now in Jesus name,
16. Those good fruits that you have
reserved for me since the foundations of the world, release them unto me now in
Jesus name

"I would lead you and bring you into the house of
my mother-she who used to teach me. I would give you
spiced wine to drink, the juice of my pomegranate."
(SOS 8:2 (Easy To Read Version))
King James Version says,
“I would lead
thee, and bring thee into my
mother's house, who would
instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my
pomegranate.”
(SOS 8:2)
Pre-Prayer
Proem
The lover shows his partner through this
that he really meant business with her, he is not the type of person who wants
to flirt with hers, but he is really committed to the love in all aspects of
it.
He goes from the elementary commitment of
dating, being involved with her romantically, by saying that he was ready to
take her home, he would be glad if she would be willing to follow him home.
The home where he wants to lead the chaste
lady of his heart to is his’ mother’s place, mother’s house, not just any house.
We have seen male partners who will lead woman to their friend’s apartments,
presenting the apartment as theirs’ and after flirting with the lady, would
desert the lady, leave her. Some would lead the ladies they are romantically
involved with to some brothels or hotels or something and after they have
satisfied their lusts on each other they would leave the lady.
We shall note that, this lover is not
presenting himself in this light, he is presenting himself as a responsible
person, he is presenting himself like someone who knows what he is doing before
starting the wonderful journey of love with her, which expectedly as being
stated by some authors on this place that naïve and people who do not know what
they are doing are not encouraged to read this book, except they have been
filled with the holy spirit before they are ready to be romantically involved
with maidens around or in the world.
This man, this lover, shows, how disciplined
he is, he shows his commitment to the relationship, and he is saying enough is
enough, enough of us sneaking around, but let us get this relationship of love
formalized, let me take you to my mother’s house, let me take you to my people.
Some may want to say, I am committed to
the relationship of love I am into with my partner, but I do not have people, I
am raised at motherless homes or something. The people who raised you up at the
motherless homes, orphanage homes are your people, you should not be ashamed of
showing your partner where you have been raised up, someone who will love you
will love you and someone who will not want to do anything with you, even if
you said you are the world’s chaste Mary, the person would yet not want to be
involved with you.
He added another word to this, and it is
the house of the person who used to instruct him. Easy to read version says, “she who used to teach me”
which implies that not just any mother. In this part of the world to which the
writer of this hails from, we are associated with many people, and almost
always we call different kinds of women mother, because of their age and their
affiliations with our parents.
But the author wouldn’t take the love of
his life to just any mother but to her mother, and specifically the person who
used to teach her.
Sometimes, some children have mothers, but
their mothers hardly have times for them, all they are concerned about is their
business empire, how they would become the richest woman in the world, how they
would be this and that in the world but they are not mindful of their children,
such people do not take care of their children.
Assuming this is the kind of woman this
lover has, he is here in implying that he will not take his lover to the kind
of woman who is not concerned with his growth, with his welfare, with his
upbringing but he would take her to the woman who used to teach him, who used
to instruct him, who used to guide him on the path he should go, who used to
teach him the way of the Lord.
Take as instance the case of Prophet Moses
in the land of Egypt, he was begotten when the decree has been issued that children
of the Jews should be killed. When he couldn’t be hidden any longer by his parents,
he was taken to the river side and dumped there, asking his elder sister to
keep a watch on what happens to him. He was being watched and when pharaoh’s
daughter found him, she went to her and asked her if she can call someone to
help her nurse the child up, to which the lady consented.
While he was being raised up, he was known
as the son of the princess, but that woman did not teach him how to live, she
did not teach him in the ways of the Lord but for the nursing woman, she was
the one who taught him the way of the Lord. (Exod. 2: 2-10; Acts 7:21; Heb.
11:24) So were Moses to be viewed here, we shall see that the woman he would
take this lover to would be the woman who taught him the way of the Lord.
The Hebrew word for instruct here is (למד), lâmad
(phonetical spelling is law-mad') which
means to teach, to cause to learn which could involve the use of rod being an
oriental means of incentive. He was referring to the means employed by his
mother to teach him what she wants him to do, and per any chance if he was not
verily willing to play along, he would force him to do it because she knows the
benefits there.
He was telling
the maiden that she has someone whom she is fearing. One of the problems of the
world today, is that many people do not have whom they fear, and that is
dangerous, when someone sees himself or herself as all in all, there would be
problems for the person if not now but in the future.
This man has
someone he is looking upward to, someone whom he fears, someone who can caution
him if he is going astray.
In addition to
this, when we get to my mother’s house, he seems to be telling her that she
would take of the spiced wine from the juice of the pomegranate.
Dr Kitto says, “the
Orientals largely (to a large extent) indulge in beverages made of fresh juice
of different kinds of fruits…” Benson in his commentary of this place says this
place teaches us how to behave, behave with our partners, behave in faith,
behave on the crucial matter of love.
This man was
telling the woman, his lover that he is ready to formalize their relationship,
he was willing to take her into the room of her mother like Isaac did unto
Rebekah (Gen. 24:67). We may imply from this word that his mother is yet alive,
or some kinds of older women in the palace (as it used to occur in this part of
the world), who would be instructing him, ensuring that he does what is
needful, instruct him of how he would be dealing with women. Some men do not
know how to interact with women having been in the company of males for years
they would be reacting with women as they are reacting with males and this
would result in troubles, breakup and separation later.
To guide
against something like this, this man says he will be instructed on how to
interact with females. Sometimes some of us also need to know how to deal with
some people in the society and this would come through the assistance of some
people who have trod the path before us.
God also
decides to come to the world to fell what we fell, to be able to guide us aright.
(Heb. 2:17-18; 4:15).

Of Solomon 8:4
"I adjure you, o daughters of Jerusalem, that you
not stir up or awaken my love until it pleases".
King James Version says,
“I charge you,
O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.” (SOS
8:4)
Pre-Prayer
Proem
Prior this place, we have read something
like this in this book, at chapter 2:7 and 3:5 but at both chapters and verses
this word is included “by
the roes, and by the hinds of the field,”
but this phrase is not included here.
The word “charge” in Hebrew is (שׁבע), shâba‛(phonetic pronunciation shaw-bah'), which means swear, adjure, take an oath. He, in
other words, makes the daughters (בּת) called bath in Hebrew which implies apple,
company. He was addressing the company or group of the daughters or ladies of Jerusalem
not to disturb neither arose his love until his love is ready.
Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges
says that it is quite unnecessary to arose love until its ready. Pulpit
commentary says, “love is its own lord. Let it have free course. Let it perfect
itself in its own best way”.
Sometimes when we arose love before its
time, it would end in disaster. God himself did not arose the love he has for
man before its time, he ensures that it was at the appropriate time that he
comes for the redemption of mankind.

Song
of Solomon 8:5
"Who is that coming up from the wilderness,
leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I awakened you. There your mother
was in labour with you: there she who bore you was in labour"
King James Version
“Who is this that cometh up from the
wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree:
there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.”
Pre-Prayer
Proem
The author was writing from the vantage
view of an observer, someone watching the proceeding of love, watching as the
spouse leans on her beloved. On closer observation he discovers that the person
he knows, and he is the person who has been raised up under the apple tree, he was
among those who brought the person up, those who tutored the person.
He cannot but tell the person some stories
about him, maybe when the person moves nigh to him, he told him where he has
been raised up, when he has been given birth to.
It is always good to lean on the Lord
Jesus in all we are doing, God has given us his shoulder so that we shall lean
on him, why not lean on the shoulder of the Lord Jesus?
